Community Service Groups
The people of St. Vrain Valley are some of the most giving and volunteer minded people in the country. Here are a few groups that are doing amazing things in our community. Check them out, and then volunteer or donate.
Also be sure to check our BLOG for additional Community Service Groups!
Wreaths Across America
Wreaths Across America began in 1992, when Worcester Wreath found themselves with a surplus of wreaths at the end of the year. Today, over 1,400 cemeteries participate in Wreaths Across America by laying wreaths on veteran graves to remember, honor, and teach about their sacrifice. The largest ceremony is Arlington National Cemetery, which raised enough money in 2018 to have a wreath for every single veteran gravestone in the cemetery.
December 14, 2019 will be the first Wreaths Across America ceremony in Longmont at Mountain View Cemetery. The cemetery has an estimated veteran grave count between 850-1,100. The location coordinator is working to finalize that number prior to the 2019 ceremony. Between a group of students at Altona Middle School and American Legion, we have already raised over $1,300 for the 2019 ceremony (over 85 wreaths)!
Members of the community can get involved in several ways:
Volunteer to place wreaths on veteran graves & attend the ceremony on December 14, 2019
This can be done by logging onto the website & adding an email to the volunteer list to stay updated.
Lead a fundraising group
A group can either participate in the "3 for 2 program", where every 2 wreaths sponsored, a third wreath is also placed at Mountain View.
or when raising funds, $5 of every $15 sponsored will be returned to the fundraising group (if they choose this option instead).
Offer corporate support
Donate any amount of money to WAA from a corporation
Donate trucking services
Transportation companies can donate drivers & trucks to deliver wreaths to locations across the U.S.
Volunteer to unload wreaths when they arrive the week of the ceremony
Volunteer to pick up & recycle wreaths a few weeks after the ceremony
Sponsor a wreath (or 10!)
Longmont Community Foundation
The notion for creating the Longmont Community Foundation began in 1988 and was formalized in 1994. Generous donors, hardworking volunteers and visionary grantees have all contributed to our success. The Longmont Community Foundation is focused on expanding its ability to improve life in the St. Vrain Valley – for now and forever. Since its inception, the Longmont Community Foundation has awarded over $9 million in grants to nonprofit organizations that serve residents of Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley.
Members of the community can get involved by:
First, we have a community endowment fund, Live and Give Longmont that allows us to respond to the changing needs in the community. Donors have contributed generously over the years to this endowment, and the earnings go to fund our Community Grants Program. We distribute thousands of dollars to local nonprofits – large and small – each year through the Community Grants Program. Our grant deadline is the first Friday of December each year. Grant applications are reviewed by our group of community volunteers. Grant awards are distributed each spring.
Second, we manage charitable funds for local donors, businesses and nonprofits – more than 75 of them. We offer you the power and flexibility in charitable giving without the legal paperwork, time and expenses associated with running your own foundation. We can help you set up a Fund that will maximize both your tax advantages and your impact in the community – for now and forever.
